Christian Horner has revealed that Renault have “given up” in their pursuit of Carlos Sainz as Red Bull have no intension of letting him go.
Although Renault were initially chasing Sergio Perez, the Enstone team has been linked to Sainz in recent weeks.
The Spaniard, though, already has a Red Bull deal in place for next season that will see him remain with Toro Rosso for a third year running.
But even with that deal on the table, Renault reportedly continued in their efforts to sign him.
Red Bull made it clear that won’t happen with team boss Horner claiming they have finally given up their pursuit of the 22-year-old.
“I think they’ve given up on that,” he told Sky F1. “Why would we let him go?
“He has a long-term agreement with Red Bull, we’ve got him if we need him, and at the moment I wouldn’t say Renault was a better bet than Toro Rosso.
“Having invested in him it doesn’t make sense to release him to Renault.”
