Ricciardo: ‘Crash caught me by surprise’

Daniel Ricciardo has said he is "obviously a little disappointed" to have crashed out of Q3 at his home Grand Prix in Australia.

The Aussie went spinning and crashed into the barrier at Turn 14 to ensure he will start on the grid P10 for Sunday's race, unless his RB13 needs a new gearbox.

"I'm fine physically – emotionally I'm obviously a little disappointed," Ricciardo said.

"It happens. I have to try and have a bit of perspective: at least it didn't happen in Q1.

"We made a big step in Q2, it was looking alright, but then the [first lap] in Q3 was a little messy and Turn 14 just caught me out, caught me by surprise.

"I went in, the rear broke away, and unfortunately there wasn't a way of catching it or saving it."
