Mercedes GP chief Ross Brawn believes that should the team achieve their goals for the season, Michael Schumacher will stay on for another season.

The German has endured a frustrating season thus far, retiring in four of the six races and coming home in tenth in the other two. This is despite showing good pace in qualifying.

Regardless of this disappointment, Brawn insists that Schumacher – who is in his third season with the team – remains Mercedes’ number one choice for next season.

“Michael is a great driver, he adds a lot to the advancement of the team and is an icon of motorsport,” Brawn is quoted as saying by Sports Bild.

“Before we think about other drivers, we to have to talk with Michael about his future. We have no real plan B,” he added.

Mercedes CEO Nick Fry recently revealed that the team are keeping an eye on Paul di Resta as a possible replacement for Schumacher, but despite the seven-time World Champion remains coy about his future.

“My decision hasn’t changed,” he said late last month.

“So far we’re not focusing on what happens next year, or in the future. It’s more about what happens right now.

“There’s no news for you yet, and I don’t want to get involved in a deep discussion on it, so let’s leave it at that.”
