Michael Schumacher caused a stir in Germany when he recently proclaimed that “Switzerland is the only home I have.”
The seven-time World Champion, hailed often as one of Germany’s greatest sons, has lived in Switzerland for the last 15 years, having moved to the shores of Lake Geneva with his wife and two children.
“The fact that Switzerland is clearly the only home I have is probably because I left home when I was very young and have spent a lot of my life abroad,” he told Swiss newspaper the Neue Zuercher Zeitung.
“Home is where we feel happy – and that’s just on Lake Geneva.”
However, his comments did not go down well in the country of his birth.
German daily the Bild picked up the story, running it under the headline: “Schumi, what should we take this to mean?”
This prompted a bit of a U-Turn from the Mercedes GP driver who responded by saying: “Rubbish! Of course I’m German, I have a German passport, and I look forward to it every time I come to Germany.”
