McLaren reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne has scored the first points for his Honda engine powered team in 2016.

The Belgian driver placed 10th at the Bahrain Grand Prix and got himself on the point scoring charts on his debut Formula 1 race.

Vandoorne, who even scored points before McLaren’s premier drivers Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso, admitted that although he did not have the best of starts on the Sakhir International Circuit, he was delighted at his one point on his first ever F1 GP.

“The start was a little bit difficult,” the 24-year-old told Sky Sports. “But in the end we more or less maximised the opportunity. For my F1 debut I can be very happy with that.

“Since the beginning of the weekend I’ve felt comfortable. I just tried not to make mistakes. To come away with one point is a bonus.

“I came in without any expectations so to come away with one point is fantastic.”
