Although Sebastian Vettel says he should have “done a bit better” in qualifying, he admits Mark Webber did a great job.
The Aussie claimed pole position for Sunday evening’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix after posting a 1:39.957.
That time put Weber 0.118s up on Vettel, who had a scruffy final lap as he made a mistake into the first corner.
The four-time World Champion, though, still managed to finish second in Red Bull’s fourth front row lock-out of the season.
“I think it’s a great result for the team,” said the 26-year-old.
“At the start of qualifying, Mercedes looked very strong, especially in Q2. We seem to be able to find a bit of extra time in Q3.
“Mark did a very good lap so congratulations to him.
“I should have done a bit better, but I don’t know if it would have been enough. He did a great job, no mistakes.”
Looking ahead to Sunday’s grand prix, Vettel will be chasing his seventh win on the trot and is expecting a “strong race tomorrow.”
