Pascal Wehrlein is adamant he will be ready to step up to a Mercedes race-seat if required in 2017.
Although Lewis Hamilton still has years to run on his Mercedes contract, his team-mate Nico Rosberg’s deal expires at the end of this season.
Following their Spanish GP clash, reports have emerged suggesting that Rosberg could head to Ferrari next season as the two parties have been ‘flirting’ with one another.
These rumours added some spice to Wehrlein’s Mercedes run on Day Two of the Barcelona test.
In the wake of the test, the Manor driver was asked whether he would be ready to step up to Mercedes if required next season.
He replied to Motorsport.com: “Yes I would be ready.”
Asked if Wednesday’s run felt ‘like being in an audition’, he said: “You always are, you cannot relax, step back, hope or be sure of what happens next year or the next years, so you always need to push.
“You always need to push yourself and make the best out of it.”
