Wolff: Wehrlein in frame for Williams drive

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff believes there are four drivers in the frame for a Williams seat next season and Pascal Wehrlein is one of them.

Wehrlein, who is on Mercedes' books alongside Force India's Esteban Ocon, could be without a driver as current team Sauber look set to become a testing ground for Ferrari's young drivers.

However, Wehrlein, 22, could find himself at Williams next year – even though it would go against the rules put in place by sponsors Martini that requires one Williams driver to be over the age of 25 for marketing reasons.

"I think it’s four drivers they are talking too," Wolff told Sky F1. "Robert [Kubica], Paul [Di Resta], Pascal and Felipe [Massa].

"But even if we could give our opinion I think we shouldn’t. A racing team will fundamentally make its own decisions for the best interest of the team and the best driver combination in the car.

"I don’t want to have any situation where it looks like I'm compromising anybody like a big brother."

Wolff also sung the praises of Paul di Resta, belieiving he also deserves a chance after shock comeback in Hungary.

“Paul has been driving exceptionally," Wolff added. "I think he deserves a go. His career is unfinished in Formula 1. I’ve seen him performing in DTM and I’d be happy if he was given a chance."
