Five drivers went into qualifying knowing they would be taking some form of grid penalty, with George Russell (five places), Charles Leclerc (10 places) and Sergio Perez (30 places) combining with Max Verstappen (30 places) and Lewis Hamilton (65 places) all knowing their qualifying positions would change on Sunday.
Wet conditions took over at Interlagos after FP3, with particularly heavy showers having taken place in between sessions, leaving a queue of drivers to head out on track with rain falling at the start of Q1, which led to an almost immediate red flag.
Once the weather cleared enough for the drivers to get going again, a continuous train of cars lapped around Interlagos both to clear water, and find as much lap time as they could.
A crash for Gabriel Bortoleto ended his session, though Franco Colapinto, Pierre Gasly, Lance Stroll, Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez were also out at the end of the Q1 session.
Q2 saw drivers continue to find time as the track surface improved, though Verstappen opted to not take part with his grid penalty coming, while a car issue mid-session for Arvid Lindblad ended his day in Q2.
A crash for debutant Rafa Camara ended Q2 early, too, with penalty-takers Hamilton and Verstappen dropping out, along with Oscar Piastri, Camara, Lindblad and Carlos Sainz.
With further rain on the horizon, the drivers knew that early on in Q3 would be the best time to set flying laps.
With that, Lando Norris secured a third pole in a row at Interlagos ahead of Russell (though a grid penalty is to come), Kimi Antonelli, Leclerc (again, grid penalty to come) and Liam Lawson ahead of Nico Hulkenberg.
