Sergio Perez: Fighting for wins in 2022 or I'm out

Sergio Perez’s three-year Racing Point contract may be his last in Formula 1, that’s his thoughts should he not be in a race-winning position come 2022.

Last year Perez put pen to paper on a new three-year deal with Racing Point.

The contract means he will have spent nine years with the same team come the final race in 2022.

And at that final grand prix Perez says he needs to be in a position to be fighting for the race win otherwise it will be his very last in Formula 1.

“What gave me the hope is a change of rules and that I know what’s going on with the team,” the 29-year-old explained to Autosport.

“I have to be also realistic. I cannot be with Mercedes or Ferrari. [So] this is a fantastic place to be.

“Many drivers would love to be here, especially with what is going on behind the scenes. So it’s a good opportunity.

“But obviously it’s going to be my 10th year in F1. If things keep going the same way I don’t see me extending my career much further than 2022.

“Three years in Formula 1 go by very fast. I’m very optimistic and I’m ready to fight for wins and I’m all for it.”

The Mexican racer spent two years at Sauber and a year at McLaren before heading to Racing Point, known as Force India, in 2014.

He’s bagged five podiums for the Silverstone-based team, all third-place finishes.

The racer, who dreams of one day adding a P1 to his tally, believes despite his three-year deal, Racing Point will not stand in his way should he be offered a drive with a top team.

“The way I see it is that I’ve been so long in this team it’s really become like my second family,” he continued.

“So I don’t think there will be anyone more happy if an opportunity comes to me with a top team. They will for sure give me the opportunity.

“But if that’s not the case it is a fantastic place to be.

“So why not commit for a good, long-term future, and then I’m sure I’m going to be very successful here.”
